I am an inventor, traveler and industrial designer based in Bremen, Germany. I have worked, lived and studied across Europe and Asia.
After starting with computer sciences, in the end I graduated with a master’s degree in Integrated Design at the University of the Arts Bremen. Integrated Design is an interdisciplinary field of study, which allows to collect experiences in graphic, fashion and industrial design. Thus, enabling one to combine these experiences freely and to gain a broader view on design.
The designer being the intermediary between user, client and manufacturer, I learn everything remotely related to industrial design. May it be welding, CNC-machining, wood working, photography, sewing, screen printing, gardening, programming, printed circuit board design, computational fluid dynamics analysis, sociology, psychology etc. etc. etc. But just to the extent that I can understand what is possible for the real professionals in their respective fields. Jack of all trades master of… design.
It is said that design is a problem solving methodology, but most often identifying the problems that need solving is the hardest part. For example, the question is not ‘what is the best power drill?’ but ‘what is the best way to get a hole into a wall?’ Most likely you are not going to revolutionize hole drilling, so you move on to identify the ergonomic, functional or economic problems of existing power drills. And only then do you tackle the aesthetic problems. This approach of identifying and solving problems from biggest to smallest is not fast but it is where meaningful innovation can be found.
